On SmartKeyword, we show your position for each keyword, and your average position for a group of keywords.

What is the average position?

Your average position is your "global" position, when we make the weighted average of the position of all your keywords by their search volume.

It gives you a general idea of your place on Google on all your keywords.

For example, if you are 2nd on a keyword with 1000 searches per month, and 20th on a keyword with 200 searches per month, your average position is equal to:

(2*1000 + 20 * 200) / (1000 + 200) = 5. This position is therefore "closer" to 5 than to 20, because your 2nd place on a keyword with 1000 searches per month has more impact than your 20th place on a less searched keyword, with 200 monthly searches.

On the contrary, be careful, if you have a position > 100 on highly searched keywords, it may negatively impact your average position!

Where to find it in SmartKeyword?

On SmartKeyword you can have the information on your average position as a graph in the tab "My keywords", which allows you to follow the progress of your SEO work and the improvement of your positions.

When you filter on a particular tag, your average position is automatically recalculated: you can therefore see the themes on which you are more efficient.

You can also find it in the "Reporting > Traffic" tab on the keywords part (below the graph):

You now know everything about your average position, so get to your keywords!
