Discover in this tutorial how to add a user to Google Analytics in less than 3 minutes!

In this quick tutorial we’re going to explain how to add a new user to Google Analytics and define precisely each user’s rights! It can be very practical when working with external partners or simply new colleagues! 🙂

Without further ado, here is the tutorial:

I. Google Analytics: the steps to add a new user

  1. Click on “Administration” on the gear icon below (framed in red).

  1. In “Account”, click on “User management” as shown below:

4. Click on the “+” on menu’s top right corner that has just opened, and then on “Add users”:

5. Enter the new user’s email address and set the rights you want to grant him according to the nature of your collaboration (make sure to read what you are authorizing!). Then, click on "Add" at the top right:

II. Google Analytics: how to choose which rights to give to new users

Here we will use these functions’ official definitions written by Google Analytics.

  1. Edit

The ability to perform administrative and reporting tasks (for example: adding / modifying / deleting accounts, properties, views, filters, goals, etc., but not user management) and view data reports. "Edit" permission is required at the account level to create filters. "Edit" permission is required at the view level to apply filters. Collaboration is permitted.

>> It will therefore be necessary to give access to the modification to your colleagues involved with the website’s administration, but hardly ever to external collaborators except the ones such as a consultant or a trusted auditor.

  1. Collaborate

The ability to create personal items and share them. Possibility to collaborate on shared elements, for example to modify a dashboard or an annotation. The "Read and analyze" permission is included.

>> It will be relevant to give this access to your entire team.

  1. Read and analyze

The ability to view reports and configuration data, manipulate data in reports (for example: filter a table, add a secondary variable, create a segment), create and share personal items, and view shared items. Collaboration on shared items is not allowed.

🔥 Useful tip: in order to connect your Google Analytics to SmartKeyword, all you need is "Read and analyze" access.
