In this article, we will discuss the techniques for detecting and correcting image errors in SEO. As a reminder on their management, as well as their role, don’t hesitate to check this article out.

The first step is to locate the website’s ALT and size attributes of images. During an audit, a crawler is used to locate all the images with their size and their ALT attribute.

It’s also possible to use other means for the ALT attribute:

  • Using a plugin: we can see the tag when we are on the page

  • By consulting the page’s source code (right click on the image > display the source code, then search for "alt =")

However, these 2 solutions have a major drawback: we can only get an on-the-fly consultation on a page, and not the whole website’s complete listing.

Point #1: size greater than 100kB

For all images over 100kB in size, we recommend compressing them.

There are plugins to optimize images’ size on WordPress: be careful to check with your technical team if there are no compatibility issues with other plugins already installed!

Point #2: missing ALT attribute

If you’ve got images without an ALT attribute:

  • Ideally, add the attribute for each image. If there are pages that have several images, we recommend that you enter different ALT attributes to develop the content’s semantic richness

  • If this is too time-consuming for you: we recommend that you fill in at least one ALT attribute per page (in other words, choose an image on the page that will have an ALT attribute)

Now you know how to analyze and correct errors on the images! Let's move on to the next point. :)
