In this article, we will cover techniques for detecting and correcting H2 tag errors. As a reminder on these tags’ definition, as well as their role, don’t hesitate to go through this article.

The first step is to identify the H2 tags implemented on the website. During an audit, a crawler is used to locate all the URLs and their tags.

It’s also possible to use other means:

  • Using a plugin: we can see the tags when you are on the page

  • By consulting the page’s source code (right click > display the source code, then search for "<h2>")

However, these 2 solutions still have a major drawback: we can only get an on-the-fly consultation on a page, and not a complete listing on the whole website.

Case #1: missing tags

Let's analyze the pages that do not contain an H2 tag.

In that case, it means these pages have no paragraph titles, or just aren't structured at all:

  • If these are pages to be deindexed (shopping cart, etc.), check that they are deindexed or proceed to deindex them.

  • If these are low interest pages, like the T&Cs or the recruitment page, there is nothing to be done.

  • If these are pages supposed to bring SEO traffic: you have to quickly set up a structure with H2 tags optimized according to SEO rules.

Case #2: duplicate tags

Duplicate H2s reveal pages whose paragraph titles are not differentiated: it penalizes the page and the website’s SEO because having H2s with the same semantics does not help each page to position on its target keyword.

  • You have to rewrite duplicate H2s to be specific to each page.

For example for product pages, try adding the product’s name or its reference next to "description". This way, you will not have "product description" but "description of Nike Air trainers" for example.

Case #3: tags that are too long

There is not necessarily a precise recommendation on the H2’s size, but we agree that it should not exceed 70 characters. It’s okay if it exceeds and reaches 100, if it is not for the UX because it generates too long paragraph titles.

Things to avoid: use an H2 tag over an entire paragraph, as an introduction.

In this case, we recommend that you go through the tags to shorten them, except in the case of pages without SEO value (CGV, recruitment, etc.).

Now you know how to analyze and correct H2 tags! Let's move on to the next point. :)
