This quick tutorial will explain how to add a new user to Google Search Console (GSC) and define precisely the rights for each user! This can be very practical when working with external partners or simply new colleagues. 🙂

With Google Search Console, you also have the possibility to:

  • Observe the traffic coming from Google

  • Add and declare your sitemaps.xml files

Without further ado, here is the tutorial:

I. Google Search Console, what is it?

On Google Search Console, users can access some degree of permission on a "web property", which is typically a website. We recommend that you use a gmail.com email address as it makes it easier for GSC but also all Google tools.

II. Google Search Console: ownership levels

  1. “The owner” manages the entire account and has access to all the features that Google Search Console offers, such as deleting or modifying users.

  2. “User” uses simple GSC for information but does not have the ability to administer it.

  3. "Associate" is a special status. It appears when you use other Google tools connected to a GSC account.

III. Google Search Console: add a user

On the drop-down menu to the left, you can see the “Settings” gear icon. By clicking on it, we get here:

When you’ve clicked on “Users and Permissions”, you will find a list with all the website's users and owners.

On this page, you can see who has access to your GSC account.

To create user access in GSC, click on the blue button at the top right.

A window will appear as you see below. Enter the email and choose the user's access level: limited or full access, then click on "Add".

For example, by choosing the “Full access” level and clicking on “Add”. The updated users’ list is displayed again.

You have the possibility for each user to freely change the authorization status from "full" to "limited".

🔥 Useful tip: in order to connect your Google Search Console to SmartKeyword, all you need is a "Limited Access".

If you want to delete a user:

By clicking on the button to the right of the concerned user: "Delete access" which allows you to validate a user type access’s deletion. However, it will always be possible to recreate an access if necessary or if you’ve made a mistake.

… IF YOU WANT TO REMOVE AN OWNER:

On the same list, on the table’s right, the "Manage owners" button redirects you to the dedicated page, which allows you to remove from a user the status of “Owner”:

Then:
